One night, a young college kid named Cleva Kah dreamed of a girl he’d never met. Her essence commanded attention from everyone, turning heads as she glided across campus. He awoke and began sketching all he could remember of her regalness. His vision was so defined that he captured every detail from her statuesque silhouette to her contoured dress that draped over her shoulders with a vintage gathered bodice and cascading godets that flowed like the wind. His dream introduced him to the love of his life and his conviction sent him on a mission scouring the yard, showing the sketch to everyone and asking, “have you seen my dream girl?’ Instead of focusing on her, many fell in love with the dress and asked, “are you a designer?” It was then that he realized the image’s reflection, eMaGi, was her name and the love of Cleva’s life was his design.
On April 2, 2003, eMaGi™ debuted at the “Time after Time: Retro Vintage” Fashion Competition held on the campus of North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Our collection featured 17 unique designs in sizes 2-18 and was showcased by a diverse group of models aged 6-30, including both males and females. Amidst the buzz and commotion backstage of models, designers, and stylists preparing for the show, our featured model suddenly approached me with tears streaming down her face. She looked at me with a mix of emotions - relief, gratitude, and happiness; and through her sobs, she uttered the words, "You made me look curvy, not fat!" As she continued to explain her struggle finding designers who embraced her body type and made her feel confident and beautiful, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. By challenging societal beauty standards, I had succeeded in helping this beautiful model feel confident, comfortable, and empowered in her own skin. In that moment, I realized the positive impact eMaGi™ could have and the power our industry possesses to promote body positivity and inclusivity. From then on, I made it my mission to continue to break societal norms and solidify my passion for creating clothing that makes people feel good about themselves.
